A new collaboration featured in The Hindu aims to tackle zero-value plastics and combustible waste in Coonoor, potentially expanding to Ooty.
A new collaboration between the NGO Clean Coonoor, Marico Innovation Foundation, Dalmia Bharat Cements Limited, and Marico Limited to tackle the pressing issue of zero-value plastics and other combustible waste—has been featured in The Hindu.
Zero-value plastics, primarily multilayer packaging, pose a significant challenge in solid waste management, making up 80% of plastic waste and 25% of daily refuse. This waste can only be safely disposed of through high-temperature co-processing in cement kilns, a process difficult to implement in hill towns like Coonoor. The new partnership aims to solve this by reducing waste pile ups and on-site burning of textile waste, thereby lowering the carbon footprint of waste management operations. If successful, the program may expand to Ooty and other areas in the district.
