Over the decades, innovation has continually expanded in breadth and speed, serving as a source of inspiration, empowerment, and significant change in people’s lives, often bringing disruption along with it.

Throughout history, many innovations have emerged in response to unprecedented global or local events, health crises, specific challenges of the time, and new technological possibilities. As we usher in the new year amidst the lingering shadows of the pandemic, there’s a temptation to not only examine individual innovations but also to explore the broader trends that will shape ideas and progress in 2022.

Tech Adoption to Fuel Future Innovations

The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly hastened the pace of digitisation across various sectors. Whether it’s embracing remote work, reimagining supply chains, enhancing banking services, or delivering healthcare solutions, the utilisation of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) has surged dramatically. This wave of rapid transformations has given rise to a plethora of innovative tech startups in 2021. As both new entrants and established players continue seeking tools to address inefficiencies, we anticipate a surge in tech innovations, ranging from the burgeoning no-code revolution to the rise of decentralised finance.

Beyond the fintech sector, innovations in areas like social commerce, Software as a Service (SaaS), and cryptocurrency technologies are poised for growth as India’s digital adoption gains momentum. Moreover, 2022 is poised to witness an acceleration in India’s deep tech innovations, with more startups maturing and focusing on resolving complex challenges within the country. On the consumer tech front, the pursuit of “smart vehicles” and “smart gadgets” will drive further innovations in AI.

In the healthcare technology sector, innovations are expected to extend beyond telehealth solutions. With a growing number of patients, healthcare providers, governments, and ecosystem players embracing digital healthcare solutions, we anticipate the emergence of numerous health tech and biotech innovations entering the market this year.

Innovation in 2022 is anticipated to be underpinned by a strong focus on sustainability and social responsibility. As consumers increasingly shift towards conscious living, businesses are compelled to prioritise ethical and environmentally friendly practices. This shift in consumer behaviour will drive organisations to seek ideas that enable them to reduce their carbon footprint and adopt sustainable technologies to conserve ecosystems, protect natural resources, and biodiversity. These innovations not only improve local air quality but also safeguard public health and well-being. With continued advancements in research and development, these sustainable technologies are expected to become more affordable and accessible. Additionally, there will be innovations in alternate packaging materials and innovative approaches to managing plastic waste, reflecting the growing mindfulness around climate concerns.

Moreover, innovations in 2022 won’t necessarily revolve solely around new products or services; they will also encompass novel approaches to conducting business with a focus on creating positive social impact and being socially responsible. Innovators will seek to address various challenges, including those stemming from the pandemic, climate change, and rising inequality.

India, in particular, has undergone a remarkable journey in innovation, transitioning from the concept of “jugaad” to making significant strides in global innovation. This transformation has challenged long-standing assumptions about economic prospects while setting new expectations for advancement and progress. However, the current challenge lies in not just recognising the importance of innovation but also in fostering a shared understanding of how innovation can generate value for all stakeholders. This requires a holistic approach that considers the ideas and trends shaping the future of innovation and, consequently, our collective future.
